What is Kung Fu?
Kung Fu in Chinese means to be skilled. Kung Fu is an Ancient Chinese Art of Self Defense. It has been practiced and taught in China for centuries The philosophy has always been that Kung Fu be used for self defense only Its roots date back to the Monks of the Shaolin Temple. These monks'

beliefs were of peace and harmony. The use of Kung Fu was for health and protection and used as a last resort in the face of violence. Thanks to such people as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan many people all over the world now enjoy the benefits of this Ancient Chinese Art known as Kung Fu. Not only for self-defense, but also for health and well being. A healthy body houses a healthy mind. Kung Fu enables the student to combine his mind and body as one. Through discipline and self-control the student learns to be calm, relaxed and in harmony and
balance with life. There is an old Chinese saying that goes: “Control yourself, let others do what they will. This does not mean that you are weak. Control your heart, obey the principles of life. This does not mean that others are stronger”. Confidence, self-discipline, good health, coordination, respect for others and self-defense are some of the benefits of practicing Kung Fu.

Style of Kung Fu

Hung Gar is the external Martial Art taught at the Canadian Hung Kuen Kung Fu School. It is a Southern Chinese Kung Fu style based on five animals: Dragon, Snake, Tiger, Leopard, and Crane. Each animal places a certain emphases in the development of a student's Kung Fu skills. It is a graceful, but powerful Art. It is a complete system of Kung Fu with internal and external studies, weaponry, self-defense and lion dancing.

Weaponry

Weapons are a traditional part of most Chinese martial arts and are a rich part of Kung Fu's heritage.
Although steeped in tradition, weapon training plays a significant role in the student's physical development. It develops timing, power, and conditioning and adds greatly to the understanding of all the Kung Fu techniques. After all, a weapon is only an extension of the hands. There are many weapons taught in Kung Fu such as staff, long pole, broadsword, spear, butterfly knives, kwan do, to mention a few. Each weapon plays a part in the student's development.
